Onna-Bugeisha, late 1800s – Japan's Onna-Bugeishas were female warriors belonging to nobility. They were a rarity but existed well before the emergence of the samurai class. Influence from Neo-Confucian philosophy and the established marriage market of the Edo Period caused the social status and acceptance of the Onna-Bugeishas to greatly diminish by the 17th century.
