Kurt Gerstein of the Waffen SS Technical Disinfection Services. As part of his job, Gerstein visited the death camps of Belzec and Treblinka. Horrified at what he saw, he risked his life alerting the Allies, sympathetic Germans, and the Catholic Church (including Pope Pius XII) of the ongoing Holocaust. Just before his death, he was quoted as saying, "I was one of the handful of people who had seen every corner of the establishment…" He died in a French prison in 1945, overcome by guilt
