1944 – 1945. Hunger Winter in Amsterdam. The Hunger Winter started on September 17, 1944 when rail workers went on strike to stop the German occupier, who then punished them by putting a hold on all maritime transport. This cut off all food and fuel delivery to the west and north of the Netherlands. More than 20,000 people lost their lives during the winter of 1944-1945. Photo Emmy Andriesse
